This was a nice place to visit. It really made you think about a time where ordinary people didn't have many books at their disposal. The reading room was huge, with lovely stained glass, and I could picture hundreds of people sitting in there reading. There was also a small book museum; seeing the hand-written books, the only way books were made at a time, was special. The library was closed when we visited but I saw it yesterday in a documentary about the tombs of the The Medici in which it was featured and I will definitely come back to see it. It was the first public library, of course paid by the The Medici and because of it scientists were able to change the views of the world.
Since 1935, the collections have been housed in a building designed by Cesare Bazzani and V. Mazzei, located along the Arno River in the quarter of Santa Croce. Before this, they were found in various rooms belonging to the UffiziGallery.Well worth a visit, an amazing
reading room/library, superb ceiling and a lovely atmosphere.Could have been used as a setting in " The name of the Rose"!
